TEM Strengthen Their Product Line To Boost Malawi's Exports

The manufacturing industry is an integral part of an emerging economy and Malawi is no exception. TEM (Transport Equipment Manufacturers) is a Transport Engineering Company making great strides in the industry.

Based in Blantyre, the company specialises in the manufacture of a wide variety of transport-related products, including road trailers, tankers, farm trailers, armoured cash-in-transit vehicles, truck and bus bodies, vans, canopies, underground and above ground fuel tanks as well as the sales and servicing of MAN and VW trucks and buses.

The company has been in operation since 1996 and is owned by Antonio Alves and Antonio Da Silva, both of Portuguese origin, who previously worked for PEW Limited. The two have lived in Malawi for over three decades and are happy and proud to be associated with and operating in Malawi. TEM boasts a strong workforce of almost two hundred people, consisting entirely of Malawians.
In 2010, TEM began the manufacture and sale of low gravity 40,000 litre Integral Fuel Tankers - the first ever made in Malawi.  A special handover ceremony was held in August 2010 and was fully covered by the media, since which the company has gained over 20 orders for these tankers.

The future looks bright for the manufacturing industry in Malawi and TEM has plans to capitalise on all opportunities. A major increase in production output is in the works, which will see TEM increase its product range.

The plan is part of a bid to support the Government’s efforts to strengthen the Malawian economy through local production and exporting. In addition, the company has a project under way aimed at expanding the production of armoured cash-in-transit vehicles and military troop carriers for sale in Malawi and the Comesa Region.

TEM has been approached by MAN Trucks and Buses to consider installing an assembly line for the production of buses and coaches for sale in the SADC Region. According to James Kaunda, TEM’s Product Development Manager, if negotiations are successful, the deal would give a major boost to the Malawian job market and economy. It would certainly go a long way towards supporting Government policy aimed at transforming Malawi into an exporting economy.

As part of their expansion strategy, after 14 years at Ginnery Corner in Blantyre, TEM recently moved to their new custom-built premises at the Chirimba Industrial Site. The company invested MK350 million in the construction of this brand new state-of-the-art office building and factory complex, which has completely transformed the face of the Chirimba Industrial Site since construction began five years ago.
